HOW TO USE RETRIEVAL PRACTICE TO IMPROVE LEARNING
In this guide Argawal, Roediger, McDaniel and McDermott (2013) expound on the idea of Retrieval Practice and how it can be best applied with students learning habits. Retrieval Practice is a learning method focused on recalling information from memory, which is a sign of strengthening the learning process. Retrieval is a great learning strategy and should not just be used for measurement through testing. Using retrieval helps to identify gaps and assist in identifying areas that are unknown. Known subjects are solidified in long term memory They believe that the struggle to recall improves our memory. Methods like rereading get information into short term memory not long term memory where it is more durable. The more difficult it is for us to retrieve information from our memory the more learning results. |
CAROL DWECK: MINDSET- THE NEW PSYCHOLOGY OF SUCCESS
Carol Dweck (2013) discusses her research on a growth mindset verses a fixed mindset. She highlights that belief in the ability to grow and engage can improve happiness and achievement in any sphere of life. In a fixed mindset talents and abilities are fixed making the students are less engaged, they are always concerned about how smart they are or appear to be, they show no signs of engagement when they make errors, they think that showing effort is a weakness and they tend to hold grudges longer. In a growth mindset students understand that everyone is not the same, but has the same opportunity to grow. Students with a growth mindset care more about learning than grades. They realize that when they expend effort they are making new connections and learning. |
connect to discipline & suggestions for implementation
This book has inspired me from week 1 to make sure that in the future my classroom forces to students to challenge themselves. I can even use my direct experience in this class as an example of perseverance and pushing yourself. I am, and have been very comfortable with the weebly interface making small , much less informative pages. This book and this class forced me to take what skills and knowledge of the interface that I already had and grow, struggle, through them. This class is a testament o everything educators have been subconscious trying to instill in me and now I can understand and in turn instill and help my students to get a better under standing of why this is so important. As an educator the goal isn't simply to teach, but to teach how to learn.
