Understanding by design Stage #3
Stage #3Stage #3 is where you begin to develop and plan these engaging and effective learning experiences for the learners. Wiggins and McTighe help the designer of the lesson to do this using the WHERETO Method. This encompasses the entire template because using the desired results from stage 1 and the acceptable tasks and evidence of stage 2, you will create as effective lesson. Proof that t is effective means, the learner will successfully learn what is intended (Wiggins & McTighe, 2011).
W- Directs students on Where the learning is going and why. H- How are we going to Hook and Hold student and hold their attention. E- Give our students the Experiences and Equip them with the tools, information and skills to meet goals. R- Allow learners the chance to Rethink, Reflect and Revise throughout the process. E- Develop opportunities to Evaluate and self-assess using formative assessments. T- Tailor or differentiate the unit to a variety of learners while keeping the integrity of Stage #1 and Stage #2. O- Organize the layout or sequence for maximum engagement and effectiveness with respect to habits of mind. Habits of Mind are behaviors that together help to foster engagement and investment of learners into a given situation. These different skills and behaviors are brought about when an answer is not readily available and you are working though unknown situations (Costa & Kallick, 2000). Some examples would be managing impulses, analyzing data and persistence. |
